My list would be different but to each his own.....(isn't this a British magazine?).

But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep"
I find this offensive. Avedon was a friend of mine, and definitely influential, but I wouldn't consider him #1 of all time, nor would he. One more person giving his idea, without an understanding of history. It's heavily slanted towards the commercial, Stieglitz is at 72, and Helmut Newton and Guy Bourdain are at 3 and 5. Clarence White is missing entirely. No, this person doesn't know what they are talking about... very sloppy work.

I am embarrassed to admit that I know nothing of half the list. I guess their influence on me was minimal. I think everyone's list would be different with never a consensus reached.

Erik
When I saw Avedon as #1, I thought the list must be alphabetical. Not so. What a joke! Twelve female photographers and no Lange, Cunningham or Bourke-White. Perhaps they would have made the list if they had worked in advertising.
Karsh and Struss didn't even make the list.
Capa and Hurrell barely did, at #95 and 96.
Nonsense.
Odd ranking. More akin to the ordering I would find in a list sorted by nationality or alphabet.

Only 12 were born before 1900 and maybe three were involved in photography before then. Did photography not exist before Julia Margaret Cameron was given a camera in 1863?
Yawn.
Average out a bunch of opinions and this is what you produce so people can argue. A scientific method to determine ill-defined popularity.
You know, if you click on the image just before the list, it enlarges, and in the text the magazine not only says that the list is not infallible, but invites people to submit comments with a view to updating the list in the coming months.
What I like about it, is that there are photographers on that list that I'm not familiar with, together with links to their web sites. A good list for the curious.
