    Displaying images: "how to"

How about creating a sticky tutorial or similar to show how to display images in the forum?

Seems like a lot of people have trouble linking images from Flickr and other sites, even uploading to the LFPF server.

and somewhat related (this is more a suggestion), why not encourage users to not reply re-linking the image discussed or commented. We could make threads a lot shorter this way. Just quote the text so people know which image they're reffering to, not the image.

    Re: Displaying images: "how to"

A fair question. I generally avoid uploading my images to anyone's server, if possible. I link images (insert image icon, above, the post reply window) from my own website server space. That way I retain control over the images, as much as web possible and simultaneously achieve some degree of courtesy on a forum by not overloading its servers.

    Ramiro,

I'm one of those who has trouble. I've tried several times to post images from my Flickr page, with no luck. I always get a url and not an image. I'll try here, and maybe you can tell me what I'm doing wrong.

First, I find the image I want to post at Flickr, and copy the url.

Second I click the Insert Image icon, and paste the url into the dialog box.

then I get the above. (watch, now it will work perfectly)

    Re: Displaying images: "how to"

Well, my suggestion was more aimed to creating a sticky thread that everyone could check when having trouble.
Hosting your own images is nice and as you say it prevents overloading the server.

I think it would be good to have several examples depending on which host you use.

I usually go to "show all sizes" in Flickr. Choose the size I want to display and right click on the image to select "copy image url" (or whatever it is in English, my browser is in Spanish). You can also do "show image" and then copy the URL and paste it into the mountain icon.

The key to it all is to end up with a URL that shows the path to the image, that means having a ".jpg" at the end of it. So you link to the image itself but not the page where flickr displays your image.

...but Jay, you're photos always show... ¿?

I'll try with the 500px site which is a bit more complex.

    If I hit the "embed" button I get an html code. <a href="http://500px.com/photo/2174825"><img src="http://djlhggipcyllo.cloudfront.net/2174825/d8840ac4ea8f882a3e309ed1a679bb38e30b6369/4.jpg" alt="Marc Parrot by ramiroelena ) on 500px.com" border="0" style="margin: 0 0 5px 0;"></a><br/><font style="font-size: 120%;"><a href="http://500px.com/photo/2174825">Marc Parrot</a> by <a href="http://500px.com/ramiroelena">ramiroelena</a></font>

So I am going to try and pick just the part of the code with the ".jpg"
    http://djlhggipcyllo.cloudfront.net/...e30b6369/4.jpg

and use it to insert it into the "mountain icon"

There's an easier way to do it in Flickr by hitting the "share" button but I don't know how that's done.

Ramiro, I'm still not having any luck. I tried to post an image in this thread, but it only shows up as a link. I'm confused. You say you see my images in the thread, and not as links, or thumbnails?

If you use flickr, like it seems.
    Try this :

    1. Go to your image.
    2. Press "Share" (in the upper left corner?).
    3. Press "Grab the HTML".
    4. Press "BBCODE", and choose the size you want.
    5. Copy all the text in the "text box".
    6. Paste it all in a reply box here on the forum.

For THIS image in my photostream, when doing the list above, I get this (withiut the / in between, placed there to show you the code):
    [/url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/taulen/4867318517/][/img]http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4077/4867318517_a065d8ef99.jpg[/img][/url]
    [/url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/taulen/4867318517/]Waterfall / Tvindefossen - Norway / Voss[/url] by [/url=http://www.flickr.com/people/taulen/]taulen[/url], on Flickr

And when I paste this in this forum, I get this:

Waterfall / Tvindefossen - Norway / Voss by taulen, on Flickr

(Sry, this is not a large format photo. But chose it just for this example.)

    Re: Displaying images: "how to"

I couldn't remember how to do it with the share button.
Like Taulen says, the easier way is to "share" button -> grab the HTML/BBcode ->use the BBcode (This forum uses bbcode) and just paste it on the text box.

[IMG] breakfast at Don's by rabato, on Flickr[/IMG]

You get the [IMG] at the sides of the photo because you pasted the code into the mountain icon. There's no need to do that, just paste the code into the box where you would write text.
