Carrying Arca/Gitzo

Arca afficianados: I'm a birder with a CoolPix therefore a "Digiscoper". I carry the tripod/head/te lescope all connected-up either legs out and over my shoulder or legs in and on my back like a ruck sack. I've just got the Arca and now wonder if I can carry o n my present style. Will it "kill" or damage the Arca? If not should I have the tension on or off when carrying? Thanks Jerry
