    Re: Paper negatives

I am now the proud owner of an approx. year 1910 18x24 "Reisekamera" beautifully handcrafted in cherrywood. The meisterstück came with a nice bunch of lenses incl. 2 Emil Busch, an E. Suter, 2 Goertz Dagor, a Hugo Meyer "weitwinkel" and a Johs. Schneider all in excellent condition taking the age in consideration. This is my very, very first large format paper negative attempt. Unfortunately I do not have a scanner but made a simple light box of white cardboard, a white acrylic plate, a flash and my digital camera. Inverted, slightly cropped and adjusted in PS.

No matter what I do the prints are just a very low contrast gray.
Am I correct in assuming that I need a more focused light source like an enlarger?
I also tried a Nikon SB80DX flash with some really strange results.
I haven't done any darkroom work since Jr High in the mid 70's so I really have no idea what I am doing, other that having fun!

If the picture uploaded this is: the paper negative, inverted in PS, lousy contact print

You have paper white in your negative but not really a full black. So your darkroom is dark and your paper is not fogged.
Maybe more exposure to the negative? or is the developer weak or old?

Lovely image soft and well lit. Captured the innocence well.

I've just started using some Kodabrome II RC (grade 3) paper from the early 1990s for paper negatives. The accordion shot just above on post #245 was shot on that. I need to experiment more with it, but I like the results so far.
