    who is your favorite portraitist??

I elect Katy Grannan as the greatest living portrait photographer, Since I got an 8x10 camera all i want to do is point it at people, so I've been looking at alot of artist like Soth, Dijkstra, Mann, and Grannan, and taking into acount Avedon and Arbus are dead, I think that crown fall to Grannan. Her work is so intimate and modern but still nods to photographic history, I was blown away by her book Model American. What do you guys think?

Peter Britt 1819 - 1905, born in Switzerland

For bringing both the art of wine-making and the art of photography to Southern Oregon. For creating a record of the times and peoples of Jacksonville, Oregon. For taking the first photos of Crater Lake. But mostly for being so forthwith as to tell the unhappy daughter of an inn-keeper, "Madam, if you wish a photograph of a pretty face, you shall have to bring one."

I forgot about Katy Grannan but like her pictures a lot.

Most of the academic portraitists really suck. I like Greg Miller and !!!ALEC ALEC SOTH SOTH!!! though.

On a more popular magazine level I like Dan Winters and Frank Ockenfels 3. And while I hate most of what Annie Leibovitz does, 1 out of 100 are magnificent.

August Sander would be my choice.
Shelby Lee Adams would also be up there.

I'll go with Dan Winters. I just bought his book (mostly 4x5 portraits) and his work is stunning. Builds most of his own sets, lights conservatively and really makes his subjects look captivating.
