Need a replacement glass for a DeVere 504 enlarger?

I had a darkroom mishap today. The negative holder on the DeVere 504 slipped and fell and one of the pieces of glass in the holder broke. The really bad news is that this is not my enlarger so getting a replacement part is now a top priority.

This negative holder accommodates 4x5 negatives, in a hinge type arrangment between two pieces of what I assume must be Newton glass. Each piece of glass clips in and can be removed for cleaning. The exact size of the glass is 6 1/8 inches by 4 15/ inches. It has beveled edges so it can be retained by the metal clips.

Google informed me that Odyssey Sales in Brighton England is a distributor for DeVere and I have already emailed them and hope for a response.

Can anyone tell me if they have acquired this replacement part and if so from where. In case Odyssey doesn’t stock it are there other sources for this glass. Is there anyone who can cut a piece if necessary?

    Thanks for you help.

    Frank,

Have a look at the web site for Focal Point in the USA (https://linux19.domainnameservers.ne...ore/agora.cgi).

It should be much cheaper than the glass I will need for my 8x10 Durst negative carrier.

    Hope that helps,

    Len

If all else fails, try KHB in Toronto:
    http://www.khbphotografix.com/

They carry a lot of stock, and you can pick it up since you're nearby.

    Frank,

You may want to check a little closer, as often the top glass is AN, while the bottom is good optical glass. It makes a difference in price, and both could make a difference in quality of image.

The link that Allen provided on Focal Point has a good write up on AN glass and its use, and potential issues with using AN glass on the bottom.

Hope that is more helpful than the link I provided last night,

    Len

    thanks again for the help
haven't gone back to the site yet

but how does one differential optical glass from Newton glass by looking at it
the plate may very well have been switched in the holder on a previous occassion
some time ago I took both sheets out to clean them and may not have reinserted them in the correct orientation, since I was not aware there is a difference

I second the advice of all three, Oddessy, KHB and fpoint. Also ebay frequently has listings for glass (thought sometimes just from KHB's online store).

Anti newton glass is not shiny. It is pretty easy to tell. No matter what it originally had, you should get anit-Newton for the top and plain optical glass for the bottom. Its not a bad tragedy to have fresh glass as the glass doesn't last forever and occasionally needs to be replaced anyway from years of scratches etc.

    Frank,

Not everyone uses AN glass, the difference is the AN glass will look a little "frosted" or textured. It should be on top.
