I haven't taken part before either and when I found this site (one year ago today ) the call for participants was on. At the time I had no dark room or enlarger so I could not participate but this year I am good to go and pretty darned excited about it.
In art school I traded art work with many of the students and I consider that to be one of the highlights of the whole art school experience.
