What focal length to get these kind of architectural close-ups?

    Hi guys!

I just stumbled upon Ole Kolehmainen's artwork and he does close-ups in 8x10 of buildings ... Looks great!

What kind of focal length do you think he works with?

Is this a case for the apo tele xenars 600/800?

    Kind regards

    Paul

Assuming this was taken at any distance, use the very longest thing you can find for your format. Or maybe these are crops?

Hard to say without knowing how far from the building he was.

He may have had a vantage point from another building just across the street and as such maybe not a very long lens was needed. How long did you say that piece of string was?

If you want to know because you want to take similar pictures make yourself a viewing frame and you will know exactly what focal length you need for whatever scene.

That is a fun example of shooting for abstracts and details.

I don't know if the specific focal length matters that much. If you can't get close, longer lenses will probably make it easier but it is simply about framing (or cropping) down to what you want.
