I call these sorts of portraits "Charity-Hospital-Insurance Company Portraits" with the required sad doleful eyes... having done about a jillion of them over the years for exactly those kinds of clients.
I like this portrait too, although she does look like it wasn't her idea. It has an aliveness quality, if that's not too BS'y. Frank is still there even in the routine jobs.

Do you sit em down, or do it standing up? I ask because mine always seem to move, never have much luck unless I give them plenty of room. Also what sort of aperture do people use? I have been at f8.

    Thanks

I think it was wide open at 6.3 or 8, she sat on a stool all traditional like. I wish we fixed her hair. I've photographed her for a couple of years and she is a beauty but she really only has that sad expression, her smile is a bit awkward.

Yes it is hard to make sure they don't move between focusing and exposure. I try to watch them during this phase and loading the holder is sort of second nature and smooth, I'll glance to make sure it is set right... but if I find myself fooling around with the camera for too long I will admit defeat and redo the focus. I have a stack of film with focus on the tip of the nose or hairline instead of the eyes.

Don't we all? Part of the love/hate relationship with wide-open lenses...

An excellent, simple, and thoughtful portrait, Frank. Great work.

Frank, I like her hair like that. She has a troubled sort of look, to me, and the hair adds to it.
