There's many, many posts on this in a variety of threads on this forum...
You can also read 20 or so blog posts here:

I think most people agree with you.
When I was 16 I thought my father the stupidest man in the world; when I reached 21, I was astounded by how much he had learned in just 5 years!
-appropriated from Mark Twain
yet another fine example of when the forum's search function could have provided an answer
someone should test this on all the "current" threads
I'd bet 75% could be answered of those answerable
and then you have the whole internet to search
So instead of being such grumpy people, why don't we address one of the side issues raised by the OP that I don't think has ever been discussed: Have YOU ever lost a negative?
I'll start.
Yes, but it has been more of a situation where a neg has been 'misplaced' and later found. Usually this happens when doing a bunch of rush jobs... when things get hectic and normal thoguhtful procedures degrade into mayhem and foolishness.
Not finding the photo you're looking for is so infuriating..
My improvised negative and slide archive always causes hour-long searches.
..still waiting for a lovely polaroid to pop up, while yesterday I finally
found the egyptian landscape print I was looking for.
Seriously considering either a binder based (cheaper) or drawer based (expensive)
archive system.
Boxes are out.

I've found negatives that I didn't know I had lost.
I think that what happened is that the negatives had been placed in storage with other non-essentials when the original photographer moved out of California. When the oversight was realized, it was just impractical to retrieve them, and they were abandoned.
What's-her-name #1 lost a few negatives for me.
