Excellent, this would stand out in normal film too:

    His Glance, ambrotype 8x10"
Surprised to see the light so far from the subject.

gsinico/Gelatina: I just use a broad Halogen flood directly on her face and bounce a second one off the ceiling. I get just enough illumination to safely shoot wide open on ISO 400 TXP. I my case I use Lowel Tota-lites but Arris or others would work just as well. These lights get hot and make everyone sweat, their pupils open up, it feels painful and intense just to shoot with them in the Summertime.

Frank, I moved a light-source to make a picture. Actually it was a half closure.

    Re: September Portraits

Almost every rule in the book was broken in the making of this portrait:

    1) Preflashed 8"X10" paper negatives: "You're supposed to use sheet film."

    2) Tonal range: "Blue sensitive only, shows blemishes too easily."

    3) The Fujinon 240mm Xerox process lens was wide open at F/4.5. The lens design precludes using external aperture stops, due to severe vignetting, hence it has to be used wide open. Still, it's pretty sharp; almost too sharp for flattering portraits. "That's a found lens, not a camera lens."

    4) 4 second exposure ("...one elephant, two elephants..."): "Not conducive for sharp images or good exposures, especially with people pictures."

    5) Homemade nested box camera: "Come on, get serious, spend a few dollars and buy a real camera."

    6) $25 hardware store halogen lighting: "Cheap skate, penny pincher."

    7) The victim: "You're not putting that on the Internet, are you?"

    Oh well.

I agree with Hugo! This is one of the best portraits posted in quite some time.

I must admit, that's sharper than I thought a paper negative could be.

    unrealalex:

I really like the subtle tones in this. What kind of light source is that? I usually only use available light, but need to find a simple lighting setup for portraits.
