Mine's wide brimmed and made of synthetic felt. I've tried straw but the little holes let through spots of light which diminish confidence in lens shade effectiveness.
The solid felt hat works superbly and I have several 8x10 negatives featuring a hat along the top edge or in the corner to prove I'm right.

I have used a hat for to shade the lens---and the dark slide too if I'm not wearing a hat.

The ripcurl ones sometimes have black fabric covering the underside of the brim. Mine does. Not all of them do. Cuts down on light getting through.
Used it again this evening against flare from a nearby street light.
I got a fairly wide brimmed hat for TLR shooting to naturally shade the top down viewfinder while shooting. I don't shoot with the TLR much anymore, but the hat remained part of the photo kit, and its been employed as a lens shade for years now. On one occasion when I forgot a dark cloth, it helped out there too.
