    Didn't we all. So many photographers, so few Pinkhams. Series III is rarest of the rare. This one boogered somewhat by Burke & James in the late 1960's but I'd have so welcomed it to my little fold.

    For anyone snoozing;

    I'm confused, I thought the S.A. Doublet only had rear glass.

    Any S. A. is more than rare. Series I f6 had glass at the rear, like you say here. Series II f6 had glass front and rear, and Series III was a giant f4.5 with glass front and rear. I've only seen 2 including this sale today. SIII is the holy grail.

    I was so psyched when I saw the listing this morning... I saw it and suddenly remembered why I was searching for burke and james for the last couple years... It was a perfect find; a no reserve auction with no "pinkhams", "semi achromatics", or "soft focus" keywords anywhere....

    Then the seller pulled the listing and told everyone he was going to relist at 6 with a buy it now, then he accidently listed it at 3, only 10 minutes after the notification.

    You don't see many 16" F3.5 lenses, like this Ilex Portrait. 300887377180 for $790. I know they made some nice lenses for a brief period in the 20s or 30s, but I don't know this one, may be a triplet, which can be kind of soft at this speed.

    Many of Ilex's early lenses were remarkably direct copies of Wollensak lenses. This one is almost certainly a copy of the Varium. I missed it by only a few hundred bid increments...

    One of my favorite lenses is a 14 3/4" Ilex Paragon with soft focus dial... got it really cheap.. covers easily 11x14...
