Not a soft focus lens ...
Not a soft focus lens ...
Still not a soft focus.
Some comments!:
- not a soft focus lens!
- a current listing on Ebay!!
- serial number is 25,xxx which is about halfway through the pre-Euryskop period. These are (from linited experience) slightly slower than the later series IV no.7 which have efl of 24.5" F6. Coverage is probably greater than the 20x24" given.
Is 400739651770 a soft focus lens?

The lens is a "Euryscope", c. 1878, 4 element rectilinear designed lens with an f/7.75 aperture. The black bands on the lens are an easy way to identify these as being there "standard" rapid rectilinear lens. Later on, Voigtlander would also make an extra rapid version which was f/6.
And of course, this early version didnt feature Schott/Jena glass. I believe it is model 7 with 27 inch back focus, 4 1/3 diameter lenses, covers 20x24 in landscape (stopped down) or 18x22 portrait (wide open)*
Also see attached announcement of the "Euryscopes" from June 1877 - Photographic News.

Yes, that sized lens should have the "diffusing adjustment" see http://antiquecameras.net/softfocuslenses2.html half way down the page

400739651770!
See antiquecameras.net - the section on soft lens 2.
400739651770 is a 12" series II - but I can't see the numbered front adjustment ring! So perhaps we should say "that some of the 3 largest sizes of series II had defusion adjustment".
Again, a current listing - bad show!
this Dallmeyer lens looks as though it's been seriously 'over cleaned', comparable to the lenses sold on eBay by one **** ****
