I know most of crusty old farts could give a hoot, but not having an iPad yet myself, I am wondering how you author a professional looking photo portfolio for it?

Frank,
I simply select the images I like best, copy them to a new folder within the Photos folder on my Mac.
In iTunes, I select to sync that folder with the iPad, and voila. All folders show on the iPad and once you open a folder you can select it to go from one image to the next.
And it will do dissolve fade slideshows instantly. Very cool.
You can also use the Apple Keynote app to include type and other slideshow features.
From Lightroom, you can export to iPad directly:

For even more automation, you can use Lightroom 3 Publish services:

Too bad I'm not subscribed to Kelby training - it would have been nice to have that preset for my iPad!
Are we truly creative, or simply too lethargic to become pedestrian?
I think they changed something, and broke the download links. Here is the link where I just downloaded the preset:

I'm not a subscriber either, but I've downloaded many of Matt's presets, all free.
The download links for Lightroom presets I mentioned above have been fixed by the webmaster. They work now, no sign-up required.

Or you can design something professional looking in InDesign (or Photoshop) and make a PDF portfolio that will work on ANY computer.
