    8x10 lens board size

i was just wondering why lens boards for 8x10 cameras tend to be so large. it seems like many people use smaller technika boards instead.

    Bigger camera = bigger lenses
    bigger lenses = bigger boards

If that's the biggest shutter you use, then you're set. But there's a lot to life after Copal 3.

Just barely, and even then the orientation of the lens has to be just right to clear the locking mechanism. The shutter also has to be mounted more in the center of the board, making the tilt axis a little off.

I used to wonder more why so many American folding cameras, Premos and the like, had such small boards.

If I had an 8x10 with a board too small to take a #5 Compound I would feel restricted. I wouldn't want to mount a brass cannon, but if I did I would feel frustrated.

Because in the old days the brass lenses were HUGE. My Grundlach-Manhattan takes a 7 1/2 in lens board and my Ansco takes a 6 inch board.

Together with a "behind the board shutter" like the Grundner shutter one needs a 9 inch lens board as used with the Linhof Kardan and Sinar Norma from the Fifties.
