Paint it pink and wear it around your neck on a lanyard. If it is not black/gray or other dark color it won't look as dangerous.

In the same vein, a wooden tripod probably looks less fearsome than carbon fiber.

The innuendo went completely over his head.
You sure showed up that dumb rentacop. Imagine a security guard not understanding EVs and light meters. But oh how I wish he had responded by asking if you were planning normal or plus one development.

Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. That way when you do criticize them you'll be
a mile away and you'll have their shoes.

never thought about any of this. But now that I think about it, I could see someone thinking a pentax spot meter could look like some sort of weapon/taser at a glance if they aren't at all familier with spot meters.

I probably should have mentioned that I've known the guy for about six years. Not sure how that slipped my mind.

I guess the point I was trying to make was that with a 5 second, cordial explanation you could have educated him and made it a little nicer for the next photographer he encounters.

Re: Ever worry about getting shot while using your spotmeter?

Many, many years ago I wore my Soligor spot meter in the Zone VI holster all the time. I had a studio on the 3rd floor of an old office building, and an irascible (or is that rascible?)) old dentist was on the 5th. One day riding down the elevator together, he saw it and said, "Is that a gun? It doesn't scare me. I'm not afraid." (Later on he finally retired when he almost killed someone with a bad administration of anesthetic ... irony.)

I've thought about this lately and have decided I won't carry the spot meter in the holster. Well, I've misplaced the holster anyway, but that's another story. I just can't be bothered with the bother of being stopped, questioned, etc., etc.

The Soligor needs servicing in any event, so it will be off to Vermont in the next month or so.

Nah. In my work, I often have to point range finders and speed detectors in public areas, and only once has anyone ever said anything. They called the police, and the policeman was basically apologizing for interfering with my work, but that he had to respond.
