The alternative to waiting until he's tired or falls asleep (you might get there sooner than him!) is to set up, focus and meter for a certain spot then wait until he gets there. Flash would be better than any other light, IMO, since it would allow for smaller aperture and you wouldn't need to worry about long exposure time.
I posted this a bit ago in the alternative print thread. My brittany using a single miniscus lens of sorts, 8x10 salt print. She's all business in the fall, hates to see me with the camera instead of the shotgun... (yeah that's also her in my avitar)

Great thread, thanks for starting it. I have enough trouble photographing our two dogs and two cats with my digital camera. I've gotten some great shots on rare occasions with the digital (and 35mm in the old days) but never been brave enough to try it with a LF camera so nothing to post but I'm enjoying the thread.
