The Last Kodachrome Lab Still Standing

A sad, nostalgic, but interesting story from the Today show about what apparently is the last Kodachrome lab left in the world. Used to be 2,000 of them, now just this one left, in Parsons, Kansas of all places.

Yes, that's Dwaynes due, I believe, to close about fall of 2010 if the quantities of Kodachrome last. I've used that film for years and it is very fine stuff still. Complex process though so it's a near impossible manufacturing job. Was incredible in 4 X 5 but very high contrast.

I used to love the KLP 200, great feel to that film. I still have a few rolls in the freezer, I guess i better stop saving for a special shoot and just use it up.

Dwaynes won't be closing, they do other types of film. Just their Kodachrome processing would be shut down eventually.

I found the following excerpts from the MSN piece rather telling:

If you could leave the world only a handful of images, what would you shoot? What would you see that we might miss, even if standing next to you? Tough questions in a world where digital cameras let us take all the pictures we want...

...a roll held just 36 pictures. So, people recorded the rhythm of life, one carefully crafted picture at a time.

Right. He said 2010 would be the end of the Kodachrome processing.

Just 36? Lately I've been annoyed at 35mm over how MANY pictures are on a roll. 36 pictures? What am I going to use all those on? So my cameras sit around for months with the same roll in them.
