I've always dreaded scanning Velvia 50 on my Epson 4990. It seemed no matter what software or settings I used the scanner output required a lot of color correction work. Given the poor state of my Photoshop skills, the result was usually a muddy, ugly mess. It was so bad that I almost gave up shooting Velvia.
Recently, I followed Joanna Carter's advice in one of the numerous Epson scanner threads. I purchased an IT8 target for Velvia 50 from Wolf Faust and built a profile for Velvia on my scanner. Still following Joanna's advice, I turned off color management in Epson Scan and scanned a Velvia tranny. When I loaded the file into Photoshop I applied my new profile and Shazam! Suddenly my scanner output is very close to what the original slide looks like. What a relief! Now I have to find new ways to make a mess of my work in Photoshop.
So here is A BIG THANK YOU to Joanna Carter. Your advice has saved me hours of work and frustration.
