lightest center column set up for gitzo 1325

I have a gitzo 1325 mkII and have a g1317 center column set. Is there a lighter alternative to the aluminum g1317? I have seen the Gitzo GS3511, but have yet to determine what material it is made from besides the carbon fiber column itself. specifically, is the base of the Gitzo GS3511 made of aluminum or magnesium? thanks

It's funny to read about lightweight Gitzo parts. The Gitzo tripod design comes from a WW1 French machine gun stand - I doubt they were concerned about a few ounces here or there.

I have this (very nice and tall) combination- 1325 mkII & GS3511. The only carbon part of the GS3511 is the column tubing itself; all other significant parts are either aluminum (collar and center plate) or SS (built-in hang-hook mechanism). The weight savings are pretty minimal if you're just comparing the center columns- I'm guessing it's about 1 to 1.5 lbs lighter than the 1317, at best. ~J

    That's right.

I use the short (6") column. Saves weight, and is a quick switch to my wimberly that is on it's own short column.

thanks for the insights! I will eventually find a short carbon center column. The 1325 really is not much lighter than the g340 gitzo I had before, but i wouldn't go back to that one. Anyone use the ground level set or will a short column suffice? I don't know how some people do without a center column. thanks

I use the 1325 w/o a ball or other type head. I use the gitzo leveling base and a rrs clamp. I get the legs in the ball park and finetune with the leveling head. Quick easy and relatively light. Rigid too.
