I like this shot... great tonal range and use of DOF. I've Tried some shots of the mask we got in Venice. I think I may shoot some more of these.

Tri, is that a scan of the negative or is it an actual print?

Replying by simply pointing out that all historical literature explains that printing in direct sun gives less contrast probably would help little to convince you… But I just bumped into the actual explanation of why it is so - and I have to say it is puzzling at least, but perfectly understandable.

What we are dealing with is… reciprocitiy failure. Yessir, nothing less than high-intensity reciprocity failure: "exposure to bright sunlight brings about less photographic action than a proportionally longer exposure to a clear north sky; the shadow areas of a picture will not print as dark under an exposure to bright sunlight as they will under the same exposure to a lesser illumination for a proportionally longer time, to produce the same highlight values." (Mike Ware, Mechanisms of image deterioration in early photographs, 1994)

I'll believe in my own myths, thank you very much, sir! Has Mike Ware studied the Holy Books of the POI? (Printing Out Image, to you heathens!) Has he communed with the Saints of Solarization? If he has, then we should harken onto him.

Just joking, of course. It is just fun trying to wrap one's mind around what is going on, not a matter of being convinced one way or the other. Making good prints is the job at hand.
