To be a complete printer, you need to understand what you can get out of your process, you need to be prepared make a lot of very bad prints trying things out. To print only in one style forever is limiting although in the short term its a productive way to work.
Totally agree with you. I've made countless "bad" prints over the 25 years I've been doing this to know what I want (I still make them, too!). I've been working exclusively in carbon transfer for about 4 years, most if not all of it has been experimentation. I know what works for me and what I like. I know how to get more relief or less. My point is, it shouldn't be all about relief. That's something that we all have to go through... experience. It shouldn't be the main thing though, in my opinion.

Another attempt at VanDyke printing - 13x18cm Fomapan 100 dev. in Tanol, printed on Arches Aquarelle (if I remember rightly).

Two recent carbon prints -- both 4x10.

I posted these ion the landscape thread, but thought I'd double up here. The one of the redwoods I am reprinting tonight to control the highlights just a little better -- probably not enough to make a difference in the scanned image on the computer screen.

A recent carbon print -- a tiny one...4x5! Taken on a 4 day solo backpack trip. Printed while reprinting the redwood 4x10 above. As with most my carbons, a lot of relief.

Vaughn, these are really wonderful... And I agree that with some subjects een a tiny 4x5 contact print might look very good.

    Re: post alternative techniques

Thanks. Not a great scan -- I noticed that the left edge is a little light. I should have flattened the image before scanning. A hand-held 4x5 contact print is a much more intimate object, compared to the relatively sterile presentation of a large print behind glass. I do both, but holding a 4x5 (matted 8x10), or a 5x7 (I mat these 12x16) is quite nice.

And you brought up an excellent point, Andreios, there is a relationship between the image and the size it is printed. Just because a print looks great at 4x5, does not mean the image will have more impact at 16x20. I am not referring at all to print quality, just the impact of the image on the viewer.
