Oskar Barnack had severe asthma. He was a dedicated amateur photographer, but was completely exhausted with toting a a 13x18 outfit through the woods. He even invented a method for making many small images on a single plate, but it was unsucessful because of the excessive grain.
The breakthrough came when he constructed a predecesor to the Leica as an kind of exposure meter for a movie camera he invented for Leitz. Apparently the grain of movie film was much finer, and by doubling the size of the standard movie frame he was able to take pictures which could be enlarged to the staggering size of picture postcards. (Nearly as large as the contact prints from his 13x18 negatives.)
After that, it was only the matter of 10 years work (and the poaching of some Zeiss patents) until the first production Leica was produced.

Germany has about 230 inhabitants per km². Striktly speaking there is no such place like in the middle of nowhere in Germany. That's why Germans are so enthusiastic about places which really are and try to let places appear as so they were.
At the spot from where the picture was taken there is a road junction with a house on the corner. The road goes to a small village about half a mile away.

The largest film my scanner would handle was 120 so this is my first result. I keep meaning to rescan this so I can get the full 4x5 aspect.

It's my neighbor's mailbox. He built it out of an industrial sewing machine that was used to sew burlap sacks closed with bailing wire .
Yeah. I'm familiar with Photoshop. It's the place I buy my film.

It really makes me wonder just how many bus stops I could find here.. I know I wouldn't find anything near this photogenic.. who knows ,, the stops downtown are plain Jane but that doesn't mean there isn't something unique there..

This was one of my oldest 4x5 negs, couldn't say it was my first but pretty repesentative, warts and all. I was already using an 18x26 copy camera at the time so I didn't find the Crown Graphic very intimidating. I could have taken better care of the negative.

Seems to be a good number of new Members here, so thought that I might bump this back to the top and see if anyone's up for posting.

    So, bump.
