    Nikkor 120mm f8 SW for 10x8?

Hi. Has anyone had experience of using a Nikkor 120mm f8 SW to shoot 10x8? This lens is nearly half the price of a Schneider XL equivalent. Camera movements may not be too much of an issue. I just wondered if the image circle was wide enough.

For 8x10 sure. I forget what Nikon claimed it was [312mm or 305mm??] but it covers 8x10.

Would there be any fall off in sharpness to the edge of the image?

I like my Nikkor 120 mm. Always get the results I'm after. I have never noticed any fall off of sharpness.

Rather spend my money on film than the extra movements the Schneider gives because the way I show usually doesn't require the extra movements. Your needs might be different than mine.

As long as you want wide, it's a great wide-angle for 8x10. It approximates to an 18mm lens on 35mm format, just to get an idea of how wide. Not a lot of room for movements, but you may not need much in the way of movements for many applications with this lens.

Sharp, contrasty, and not too huge. Useful for other formats too: on 5x7 it's a 25mm equivalent; on 4x5 it's a 36mm equivalent; on 6x9 it's a 53mm equivalent, with acres of movement .

The Nikon 120 is my favorite wide lens for 8x10. It covers easily. This image was done with the nikon 120 and a slim extra wide polarizer. The sky in the full rez print looks better than it does here, sorry. 2 seconds @ f64 fuji velvia 50. If you would like to see more examples let me know.

Since it is a great 4x5 lens, you should be able to sell if you do not like it. It tends to be the lens that gets left on my 4x5. You never run out of movements, and it is as wide on 4x5 as you can go without looking wide.

The Nikkor sounds like it will be a good investment for 10x8 film. Do you need a centre filter to ever out the light distribution across the film?
