Admittedly, the first thing I did with a Petzval lens was to make images with so much swirl that viewers had vertigo. After a half-dozen swirly images, I climbed off the one-trick pony and started working with better Petzval lenses to make better photographs. I soon found Petzval’s produce a lovely out of focus rendering with a unique character. That OOF rending transitions smoothly from the first hint of blur to total “goo” for objects far out of focus. And while it is still fun to see the just hint of swirl in some glittering highlights of an image, I think I’m done making swirlies…
