Recently returned from Shanghai after a trip with my 4x5. I picked up a local fixer and had no trouble at all. Found all I encountered to be genuinely friendly people. Don't be affraid to wander random streets, never know what you might find and if your not welcome you will soon be shoo'd away.

I think you must be taking up too much of the tourist attractions.

The biggest problem will be setting up before you are inundated with onlookers. Its a great place keep your cool blend in as well as possible and defenitly go of the beten track. The only place I had trouble shooting was in the forbiden city.

    Happy shooting.

I was there in June, it's way easier to shoot there than it is here... the police will leave you alone.
I find it interesting that in countries that have no freedoms are freer than in Canada. Just try taking photos at a mall in Canada without permission.

You may feel free using tripod in even Hidden Palace (old palace). So many place to take a picture in Beijing. HIdden palace, summer palace, great wall, Tian dan..
But in Beijing, it is somewhat difficult to encounter blue sky.
