    Rick, rpalm, thanks for the kind words! Oddly, first I saw the line of rocks, then the tree, and then a nice change of light
    lit things up. It happens sometimes.

    Not exactly an exciting shot – (well, I do like the early morning sunlight painting the nearby brush tops) – but the historical event that took place right here, where my tripod stands, might thrill you if you enjoy stories of exploration.

    Long ago, during the 2nd Jefferson administration, an American explorer crested this Rocky Mountain pass and became the first White Man to look upon what is today Idaho. This is his view – which, astonishingly, hasn’t changed since his time, even if the morning haze completely conceals the distant, snow-capped mountains in his notes. We can thank the extreme remoteness of this location for the absence of modern encroachments.

    Behind me is the Missouri River basin; before me is the Columbia River basin. Down there in the valley, flowing left to right, along the base of the furthest ridge, is the Lemhi River – and now you know exactly where I am, and the explorer I’m talking about. :^)
