The swirls were made possible because the outlet from the pool was pretty much clogged up with leaves and the current had them moving in a counterclockwise motion. And, yes, a long exposure helped. When I made the second image, the stream was moving freely as the clogged area had been cleared due to a rain storm.
Here is an overview of the pool and stream where I made the last 2 images I posted. This one was on 4x5 film.
