Re: Filter size for 210 Apo Sironar W

It looks like there really was a mount change between versions; my Apo-Sironar (the older name of the W, like Oren's) has a 110mm OD and 105mm filter size. So right now there are 3 with the larger mount and 2 with the smaller one reported here, with the latter ones being the "W" labeled ones with the stripe.
Maybe Bob Salomon can chime in on this?

Regarding the pitch of said 100mm front filter thread: my Lee 100mm adapter ring fits both my 210mm Sironar-W and 300mm Sironar-S. According to the Linos web site, the 300mm Sironar-S has a 100mm front filter thread with a 1.00 mm pitch.

I use the Lee filter system and a Lee 115mm press-on filter holder (with a 10mm doughnut-style spacer ring made for me by SK Grimes, which allows the holder to press onto a 105mm diameter lens barrel) with my 210mm Sironar-W, so I have never been bothered by the 100mm filter thread size.
It seems that it is a good solution, only problem that I have is that I have a 360 sironar s too, it has 112mm filter size, but unfortunately it's OD is 117mm just slightly bigger than 115mm.

This change in filter size is also documented in the Rodenstock literature.

In a brochure titled "Lenses for Large Format Cameras" dated 11/91 the filter size for the 210mm f.5 APO-Sironar is listed as M 105 x 1 with a Push-on mount diameter of 110mm.

From "Lenses for Large Format Cameras" dated 2/93 the filter size for the 210mm f.5 APO-Sironar-W is listed as M 100 x 1 with a Push-on mount diameter of 105mm.

Other than the change in filter size and front push-on mount diameter, all the mechanical and coverage specs listed for the 210mm APO-Sironar(-W) are the same in the 11/91 and 2/93 brochures.

I believe the name change from APO-Sironar to APO-Sironar-W was unveiled at Photokina in September, 1992. In the first brochure (11/91), none of the lenses in the photos have colored stripes around the front barrel. The 2/93 brochure proudly displays the APO-Sironar-N, APO-Sironar-S and APO-Sironar-W sporting their new silver, red and yellow "racing" stripes.

Also, there is no mention of the 300mm APO-Sironar in the 11/91 brochure. The 2/93 brochure is the earliest I have that mentions the 300mm APO-Sironar-W. However, as I have seen specimens without the yellow stripe and the -W suffix, I know the 300mm APO-Sironar began production prior to name change and addition of the colored stripes. That would place the introduction of the 80 degree 300mm APO-Sironar as sometime between 11/91 and 9/92.

This problem bothered me too, and contributed to my selling my 360 Sironar-S some time back.

Lee actually makes a 112mm adapter ring, but if you use front rise plus tilt movements with your lens it will vignette. If I had it to do all over again, and was committed to the 360 Sironar-S, I would investigate having a custom 117mm press-on holder (using standard Lee filter holder rails, which can be purchased separately) fabricated by a machine shop, along with a few doughnut spacer rings. My only lens my 115mm press-on holder (Lee part number FK-115) fits onto directly (without a doughnut spacer) is my SS150XL with CF (there are darn few lenses around with 115mm barrel sizes); otherwise I am using doughnuts to fit the holder onto my big 8x10 glass (300 Sironar-S, 210 Sironar-W, etc.), which is not a big deal at all. Lee UK charges $212USD for the FK-115 at today's exchange rate, so a machine shop might not charge dramatically more than that for a one of.

Another option is to go with the Cokin X-Pro filter system (130mm wide filters, see http://www.cokin.com/ico15/ico15-haut.html?=#x), which would work great with your 360. But this makes sense only if you use a lot of big glass and don't mind schlepping big filters around. An advantage of the X-Pro filters is that they can be used on the large 200-210mm 8x10 lenses with 135mm filter sizes (I use one on my 200mm Grandagon) by taping them to the lens barrel (the difference between the 130mm wide filter and 135mm lens filter thread width is not significant as long as the filter is oriented properly).

    Hi to all,

Mine has a 100mm front filter thread with a 1.00 mm pitch.

I equipped mine with a 100mm filter from Olympus. Still a few available on Ebay, otherwise have a look at the Heliopan site.

Attached you will find a link to a copy of the lens brochure, (Apo Sironar W) ,unfortunately only in German.

    Hope it helps

    Hi All,

    Just another confirmation to show the two different sizes;

My pre-yellow stripe 210 Apo Sironar (80 deg.) is a 105 mm filter
    with a 110mm o.d.

I think the olympus filter is orange and red only, there is no UV filter on Ebay. Also thanks for the brochure.
