Are they using the caboose as a shove platform? Or is there some other purpose for it?

Yes, they have two cabooses they take with them when they switch out the industrial spurs on the north side of town. I've caught a few nice shots over the years of a train with caboose that I wouldn't have seen otherwise. They generally back into the longer spurs since they can't turn around. I usually take a couple of shots every year of this old station, still in use by BNSF.

A BNSF freight heads up on Union Pacific's Shasta Route in August of 2001. The BNSF was detouring over its neighbor for a few days while construction was going on their Inside Gateway route in Northern California. This train is passing a few miles north of Mount Shasta.
