    tall location tripod

Anyone have any suggestions about or experience with really tall location tripods? Ideally, I'd like to get the camera up to 8 or 9 feet.

I was thinkig about my Gitzo Studex and a step ladder. That would get it up really high.

Majestic with the extension legs and double column (rapid column inside a geared column. I had one for a while, and I think it went to 14 or 15 feet with both columns.

I made a contraption out of a piece of 2x4, some aluminum angle bracket and miscellaneous hardware this past weekend that attaches to the top of my 8' folding step ladder. The contraption has a 3/8" threaded mount that lets me attach my regular tripod head to it and then put the camera on that. I tested it with both 4x5 and my MF cameras and with all my weight on the ladder about 1/2 way up and the camera almost 9' in the air, it seemed pretty stable. I made some timed exposures but have not processed the film yet to check for movement or vibration. But I want to be able to put the whole set-up on the roof of the station wagon and take with me on photo expeditions where I need a slightly higher than ground level perspective.

I used to use a Bogen 3058 with a 3057 head - it reaches up over 9 feet and is rock solid (weighs a mere 18 pounds without the head)... I juts sold it last week in the classifieds here, but they turn up on Ebay pretty frequently.

I have a Bogen 3058 that I picked up for $200 used. It is solid and heavy, but when you need height there is no choice.

Extend the legs of your existing tripod with aluminum tubing, and get an extension ladder of appropriate height.

An alternative would be to mount your tripod head on the top of a pneumatic mast and get a bucket truck to reach the top of the mast. (You've seen these masts on local news broadcasters trucks to raise a small dish.).
