    Schneider Apo-Tele-Xenar 600/9

    Hello!

I've never had a chance to use tele-lens on LF and now I think I need one. I'd buy Schneider Apo-Tele-Xenar 600/9 (new) to put it on my Technikardan 45S. But the question is will it be possible? Another thing - can anyone give me a link to the photo taken with this lens and, maybe, 400mm?

Overall, I'm not sure if this lens (166mm in 35mm equivalent) is really useful for landscapes or all I can have is 400mm.

    Thanks for your help.

No - it won't be possible to use the lens on the Technikardan - the rear element is 90mm in diameter and that simply won't fit through the hole in the front standard. The lens also weighs about 2kg - I don't think it would be a good idea to put that on the front of a Technikardan. It is really an 8x10 lens.

If you've never used a long lens on 4 by 5, 600mm is a very long lens. I don't know what you have in your lens kit, but a 300 might be a good starting point to see if you like the longer lenses. My longest lens is a Fuji 450 C, not a tele design, but a fine lens, and the maximum I would ever use. The draw on that 600 might be a bit much for your bellows, plus its probably a heavy beast.

    Alex,
I use the Schneider 400 Apo Tele Xenar Compact on 5x7 and 4x5.
It is an excellent match for both formats and easily managable.
Optical quality is high and the trade off is heavier weight than a Fuji 450
but with much less bellows draw-somewhat less than 12".

Take a look at the Nikkor Tele set 360/500/720. I have the complete set and rately use the 720 but the 360 and 500 are excellent. The 360 is very comparable in quality to my 300 Nikkor M and the 500 isn't far behind. Basically the set is one main component that's in a copal 1 shutter and different components for the rear that makes the other focal lengths. The 360 is f8, the 500 is f11 and the 720 is f16 max aperture. The lens is not nearly as large as the Schneider and the performance is superb. Pricing is quite reasonable too. I think I paid $1700 for the complete set used a couple of years ago.

You can definitely use a longer lens than 400 mm on your Technikardan. I use the (non-telephoto) 450 mm Fuji-C.

Got it. I guess I'll get Schneider 400mm because no way I can find Fujinon or Nikkor here, in Moscow.

    Thank you.
