Just curious. What are people billing for mileage these days? I am putting together a proposal for a Boston Architect.

"The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep"
Our mileage rate at my day job just went up from $0.50 to $0.585

IRS rules that you can deduce $0.585 cents per mile driven starting July 1.
Many people charge more.
I always charged twice actual cost of gas to factor in ware and tear. My van goes 12 mpg. But these are just for out of area jobs.

Wealth is a state of mind.
Money is just a tool.
Happiness is pedaling +25mph on a smooth road.
memo at work today: $0.585 per mile, effective July 1.

Politically, aerodynamically, and fashionably incorrect.
At my magazine, we went by the IRS rule, and most photogs found that acceptable.

Why not charge actual costs plus normal markup for expenses? Unless you have no idea what the costs are.
I tally expenses vs mileage and use the higher deduction.
I made a spreadsheet to calculate my total vehicle overhead ($6200), minimum miles driven (17000), price per gallon, and vehicle miles per gallon.
I don't usually charge much profit on this since it tends to anger clients, but I think it is fair to cover my costs at the minimum. I end up with about 5% profit anyhow.
As the price of gas or other variables change, I make adjustments for my billing needs.
At $4.00 per gallon these are the price per mile to cover my costs:
My Subaru (Average 24MPG) - $.53 per mile.
If my car got 20MPG - $.56 per mile
18MPG - $.59 per mile
15MPG - $.63 per mile
12MPG - $.70 per mile
i make a killing on mileage. i buy cars very cheap (read $500) and maintain them myself. (i am a mechanic and body man at my "real" job).
my car has been running trouble free for almost a 80,000miles. it now has 195,000 on it. it gets 28-32 MPG depending on the time of year and how fast i drive. surprisingly i get about 30MPG at 80MPH!. i drove the most miles ever this year. should be able to write off more than i need.....
