    Building Ruins, Elizabethville, NM ??
    [correction: Elizabethtown, NM]
Took this a number of years ago - ghost town like setting, according to my notes, Elizabethville.
Tried to find on a map but nothing shows, so the location name may not be correct.

Linhof Technika 4x5, Lens most likely 150mm Symmar

"Altar, Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista"
That actually creates a physical sensation in my eyes! The crispness throughout is essential.

    David,

    That's a wonderful image !
Beautifully framed and sharp, wonderful sense of depth.

Not only is the altar spectacular, the entire church structure is an architectural classic, a real masterpiece.

Thanks for the kind comments! This small, beautiful chapel is in a fairly remote village high in a Swiss valley. Its design is extraordinary, as are the acoustics - to hear a chamber choir in this chapel is sublime.

Beautiful tonality, from open shadows to sunlit.
Did you use an orange filter, or which?

    David,
Bravo, well conceived and executed. That crumpled rose is what pulls it all together and makes it complete.

David, I dig this shot. I was wondering, though... with the 75 I think you would have had enough rise to shoot this with the camera level so that the verticals didn't converge. I've been shooting architecture for a living for 20 years, so this is the first thing my eye goes to. Just curious if that was a conscious choice or not?

    Thanks again, Trent and Christopher.

On the converging verticals, I think part of this may be my technique, but a larger part is probably the actual shape of the building, accentuated by some optical effects in Mario Botta's design. In other words, what appears as a straight line is actually curved - this is perhaps more obvious if you photograph a corner where two walls meet, but is also visible on a plane. The wall behind the altar is not a semi-circle on top of straight lines; it's actually a subtle parabola. This may be one reason why the acoustics are so good, and is a good reason to go back and check! One of his larger buildings, the Bank of International settlements, is close to where I live, and has similar characteristics.

By the way, Christopher, your website is truly outstanding!
