I was in Yosemite last weekend and was wandering around one of the many burned areas in the valley (not the Rim fire area). I came across this charred snag. It reminds me of a beatnik, with his beret on. Then again, might just be the brain cell abuse of coming of age in the 70's.

I think what really helped is that the sun was at least partly obscured by a branch and leaves. In terms of metering, my strategy was to completely ignore the sun, allowing that area to blow out, but to then average my meter reedings from lit and shadow areas, then hope the contrast was low enough for my scanner to capture.

Actually, there have been arguments. A friend says he witnessed one where a lady accused someone of "copying her shot"...
I found this section of tree wandering along the Merced river in the Yosemite valley. To give a sense of scale, the part of the tree in the image is about 5 or 6 inches across.
