You've got it right scheinfluger_77 and barnacle, bottle trees (Brachychiton rupestris) are weird and tough. Their trunks store water which is a useful adaption for places where it might not rain for a few years. Farmers often leave bottle trees in fields as drought insurance because cattle will eat the core of these trees after they are cut down and split. Here's another example:

Spent a couple of days in Florida, and explored along the "Forgotten Coast." This is really a great place to photograph that was just far enough away from my old place that I couldn't get out there much. Now it's 8 hours away though, but a good friend lives just up the road. Hopefully we'll have more time there in the future.
Here's a nice tree found in the Aucilla WMA. Sinar Handy 4x5, 65mm f/8 Super Angulon, T-Max 100, FX-39:

Taken with a wooden box diy 5x7 camera that I made to fit a Schneider Super Angulon 75mm.
Not completely happy with its results. It's probably too wide for my taste and the lack of rise makes me include too much land. This one is cropped however at the bottom.
Fomapan 100 in HC-110.
Definitely going back to Moersch Tanol soon.
