I would be interested in your method. By the way someone has the Hammond book on e-bay for sale. It is in the Vintage other accessories section I think. It is a very good book. I would get it if you can.

The brown tripoli came from a set of abrasives sold by Dremel, but it's a fairly common substance, and I'm sure there are other sources. I know a hardware store in New York, for instance, that sells various abrasives like this in sticks. I don't recall exactly which oil I used (a little of this stuff lasts a long time), but it was something fairly ordinary like "3-in-1" oil.

David, thanks I'll check out the sources you mention. I've also read about pumice powder mixed in oil?

Ron good luck on the book. I just finished reading the whole thing and it has great information in it. I highly recommend it. And no, I'm not the seller!

    Hi all,

You people are mind readers, I just received a NOS Adams Retouching Machine. Does anyone know how to arrange the Leica Stereo Zoom SZ-4 microscope head??? I did scan the web but cannot find any photos for this.

Brown tripoli and others grades should be available at your hardware store, in the tools section for metal polishing. Triple degummed castor oil may be a problem. Nitrocellulose lacquer and thinner should be available also (for making retouching fluid).

I guess retouching is not quite dead yet.

Retouching fluid is still available, see B&H Since its manufactured by Kodak, probably a good idea to find a home-brew formulae.

I think that it's important for some of us to keep the knowledge and skills alive.

Imagine the sense of accomplishment when successfully retouching a real neg compared to ten-minutes in photoshop.
