What's an Apo Artar HM 75mm? I just got one!

Can someone please tell me about an Apo Artar HM 75mm enlarging lens? I just got one, but I'm not sure about it's characteristics? Is it good for normal enlargements?

I suspect it's a predecessor to the Apo Componon enlarging that I currently see on the Schneider site. But, I'm not sure.

"Artar" is the name of double-lenses from Goerz American Optical, not Schneider. The 75mm can be used for 6x6cm (2 1/4 x 2 1/4") negatives as enlarging lens.

This is a Schneider Lens. I missed a (1:1) on the label though, which follows:

    Apo-Artar HM 4/75 (1:1) Schneider-Kreuznach.

Above that on the lens, it says Multicoating. Lens Made in Germany.

Serial number is 14,388,301. It looks to me like it was made in about 1990.

I say it's an enlarging lens, because it was with a bunch of other enlarging lens. One changes the aperture by turning the rim at the bottom of the lens. (Assuming the lens points downwards during use.) Then, it has a lever that extends downwards to open the aperture all the way, or close it down to the set aperture. (Like a preset lens.)

So, it's some sort of macro lens. There's no shutter, though.

Perhaps meant for slide duplication on a long-roll (35mm or 70mm) camera.

Interesting. I never thought of that.

Being 75mm, I would think that it could cover 2 1/4 sqare. If so, I was thinking I could also use it on my old S2a Bronica for macro work. Having a focal plane shutter and threads on the front lens mount makes it eash to adapt lenses to it.

The HM stands for high modulation and reserved for their top of the line lenses. As I recall it is the designation for the current lines of digitar lenses (and if you can believe some ebay sellers, the same as a digitar in a different barrel). I'd wager it is an enlarging lens and likely a very, very current design and able to focus all wavelengths of light onto that very percise plane needed for digital capture.

Two sold recently on eBay.de. Same seller, same images in both listings. Modern Schneider lens, i.e., in a plastic barrel. The HM designation has been around for nearly ten years.

1:1 suggests something along the lines of the Apo Rodagon D 75/4 M 1:1. In other words, nice sharp lens with very limited coverage.

Schneider Apo-Artar HM 4,0/75 mm is a 6 element 6 group lens optimized for 1:1 reproduction. It covers up to 6 X 7 cm format.
I use one as a 1:2 to 2:1 macro lens on 35 mm film and it delivers splendid results. One has to keep in mind lens is difraction limited from ~ f/5,6 (user observation, not an official Schneider data), so stopping down too much may not be a very good idea.
    There's Schneider's datasheet attached.

    Best regards,

    Miha
