    JoAnn Varburg's Trees

I've been looking at these recently (wish I could have got to see some first hand) and find I'm really quite coming to like them

    JoAnn Varburg's trees:

I was lucky enough to see the exhibition at the MOMA and hope to get back to NYC to see it again before it closes mid-November. I never really "got" her work until seeing it first hand. I must confess that the multiple panels of people, especially her husband, are much more arresting than the trees. I think one needs to sit and look for a while to fully get what is going on with the Olives and other trees. By the way, there is a very nice exhibition book, Present Tense, that goes with the show. The book, available from the MOMA, works a lot better than the web to experience her work.

i still haven't seen the show, but i'd like to. the book is beautiful. the trees are my favorite part.

this all surprised me ... joanne used to teach at my college, so i was familiar with her work in the late 80s. at the time it was pretty representative of everything i disliked in photography. but the new work really interested me. not sure if she changed more or if i did.
