Epson Perfection 1200U Scanner w/"Lighted" Film Adapter

I have used the Epson 1640U to scan 50 year old 4x5 Kodachromes and it worked fine-good color. I believe it uses the same light lid.

i have this scanner and transparency unit. i use it to review commercially processed c41 and black and white negatives in 4x5 and 6x7. the unit does color well, but the black and white is not so good. it shows grain very easily when you make density and contrast adjustments. it works well for images destined for the internet, and to just see your negatives. i got both pieces for $25 almost a year ago. i've not had any problems with the unit. i am tempted to can some stuff for 8x10 prints and upload them to costco's photofinishing. i normally take the images that look successful on the scan to a commercial lab to have them exhibition printed.

i did scan a sheet of color negative today and upload to costco for an 8x10 print. it looks great at arms length away, but not impressive when looking closer at details. better than a 6MP dslr at the same size, but not impressive. optical enlargements from a commercial lab are much cleaner and sharper. but at a price difference of $10-12 vs. $1.49 per 8x10 print, costco is a very good alternative with this scanner. i recently saw one of these selling on craigslist in LA for $35 with the transparency adapter. it's a great tool for exploring and working on an image before sending it out for professional scanning or printing.
