Another supplier much like McMaster is Grainger. Their selection is not quite as extensive on some items, but their prices are competitive. They do sell retail. http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/wwg/start.shtml

I added geared focusing to my Gowland Pocket View (like the camera, hated the friction drive focusing) and replaced the gear rack on my Durst 1200. In both cases I bought the gears and racks from McMaster. If you know what the parts are called, you can find every standard part used to make a Gowland or a Galvin from McMaster, so chances are Jim and Peter used McMaster as well.
Google Boston Gear.

If you still have problems we've got www.hpcgears.com here in the U.K. I've never dealt with them but they seem to have some good stuff.
Pete.
any tips on how to purchase gears ? what is a good ratio or pitch?
For camera parts, reading the description at McMaster-Carr should be enough information. If you want more detail you'll need to consult a gear design treatise or something like Machinery's Handbook.

I get such stuff at www.newport.com. It tends to be expensive but it is precision optical gear and perfect sophisticated for home projects.

Tim,
whereabouts in Melbourne did you get your stuff. I'm looking at making my own camera and will need gear like that.
Thanks
Mike
go to Stock Drive Products Website, try www-sdp-si.com. and order a set of free catalogs. included in the catalogs is what amounts to an entire treatise on geartrain design, as well as many other related issues. Definately worth the time to ask for the catalog.
