I'd say any kind of sheet film - that would include 2x3 cut sheet and above. 6x12 rollfilm can be done in a back to fit a 4x5 or 5x7 camera, but it can also be done in a dedicated medium-format-only handheld camera. So it's a gray area.
Images captured by a traditional view camera 4x5 inches in size and larger?
Any film or digital file 4x5 inches or larger captured & created by any means?

And what if the digital files are stored on 5 1/4" CD's? Or 8" floppies?
Just my 0.02, but any large format "pidgeon holing" has to include 6x12 and 6x17 rollfilm.

2 1/4" rollfilm is exempted because it is nominally "medium format" film.
Anything that has an image capture area 4x5 or larger. 6x12, 6x17, are panoramic medium format.
So for example, you can use a large format view camera and attach a medium format capture device like a digital back. What you get is a medium format image with that setup.

I thought that the Germans (Europeans) have determined that 100cm2 makes for a large format image....it was mentioned on a earlier post by someone more knowledgable than me. 6x12 wouldn't make it, but a 6x17 would by that limitation. Why does the fact that film is on a roll have anything to do with it?

<Ahhh...6x12 ??? (Doesn't make the 100cm2 limit) but the 6x17 does.> So if 6x12 does'nt make the cut, where does that leave the "split darkslide?
