    Gitzo 1530 Tripod

I'm looking for a relatively lightweight, compact 3-section Gitzo tripod like the 1227, however, Gitzo has discontinued its old line of tripods including the 1227 and replaced the old line with a completely new series. From comparing stats, it appears that the new model 1530 is a close match, but with even lighter weight: (1227/1530) Max height w/ column down-52"/52.8"; closed height-21.3"/24.4"; weight capacity-17.6 lbs./17.6 lbs.; tripod weight-3.4 lbs./2.5 lbs.

I'm interested in comments from anyone with experience with the 1530-is it comparable to the 1227? Adequate for a 3-4 pound camera? Other comments or recommendations?

    Hi Jay,

The replacement for the Gitzo 1227 was the Gitzo 1257 (their 6X Carbon Fiber tripod with anti rotation improvements). I have the 1257LVL, the leveling version of the 1257. Now Gitzo has made changes to the leg lock mechanism along with the 6X Carbon Fiber and the antitwist of the 1257) in the GT1530. Gitzo and Bogen are claiming that this 1 series tripod has the strength and support of the 2 series -1227 and 1257 series tripods. I only had a chance to see these tripods in passing at Photo Plus at the Bogen Booth when I stopped by. But, I have no experience with the new tripods to confirm the claims.

Actually, the GT1530 is one series smaller than the 1227, probably more comparable to the 1127 in size. The weight rating is improved due to added stiffness, but it's probably a little too light for shooting 4x5. Look at the GT2530 for the comparable replacement model for the 1227/1257.

Maybe that will be a good candidate for light weight 45 cameras. I will consider buying it, if I get a 3 lbs camera in this summer. And then I will need a light weight ball head, maybe the Matkins.

I used the 1530 on a recent trip to New Zealand with a Canon 5D and the 24 mm tse and 45 mm tse lenses (and also with some other lenses). Fantastic tripod. I also own one of the original Gitzo 1228 tripods. The 1530 is every bit the equal of the 1228, except quite a bit lighter.
