As others have noted, optimal focus can only be realized for an even plain. Much of the skill in using view cameras on landscapes is judging where to compromise those points in a frame for critical focus. Something dependent on the geometry, form, and nature of each subject. Most subjects are not an even plain though are close enough that stopping down is a viable solution. However others with more radical situations are absolutely impossible to image in adequate focus. Part of the creative aspect of capturing an image is selecting what areas of a frame will have critical focus and those that will be soft. ...David
Eric, it's an interesting shot anyway. You can get away with quite a lot of diffraction on 4x5. Depth of field requirements should trump diffraction concerns in most cases.
