Epson 4990 preview not matching scan

The good news is my new (refurbished) 4990 produces noticably sharper scans than the 3200 it's replacing. The bad news is while the preview in professional mode looks quite good -- providing decent color and contrast without tinkering -- the actual scan has a huge green color cast. I have to really jack up the red in the preview to get neutral scans out of it. Any ideas why the preview and scan wouldn't match? I'm scanning within photoshop and both the preview and scan are happening on the same montior (not spread over two).

    Thanks.

You might want to do a good cleanup of the glass, particularily the calibration area. Everytime I had wierd cast, there were fudges on the calibration area...

Try leaving your color adjustment/histogram window open after you make the adjustments.

That worked for me. I have no idea why it worked though. Now I just do it

To fix a color cast problem you might consider getting a calibration test target and using it to make a profile for your scanner. This has helped me a lot. Not a fix to your problem, but a green cast would normally be corrected with a shift to magenta, not red.

The first tip on keeping the calibration are spotless is the easiest potential fix. Always a good idea anyway to make sure it is spotless befoe making a scan. Also very useful to use an IT8 calibration test target to calibrate your scanner. I recalibrate every few weeks.

If niether of those work you could have a poroblem with one of the ccd arrays or the light in your scanner. Remember that quality control is, at best, iffy with most consumer scanners.

My guess is that the proper film profile is not being applied in the actual scan. I can't tell which software you are using. If SF try some low res scans with no adjustment at all if they don't match up delete the preferneces file in SF. Try again if they don't match up try one with auto adjust, then try one with just clipping of the histogram etc. to try and isolate the problem.

If that doesn't work or you use Epson scan start completely over, delete software, unplug scanner from power and USB, unplug lid. Start over from scratch making sure you have the latest version of the software.
    Thanks,

Make sure the scanner software is using the monitor profile for previewing and not a working space.

Also make sure the monitor profile is not corrupt...by making a new one.

How do you set the monitor profile for previewing in SilverFast?
