How many holders do you usually take with you when shooting?

For ultra-large format...in my case, 14x17... I only have one holder. I could only afford one. Two sheets of XRAY.

I simply take more than I think I'll ever need. Usually that turns out to be more than I need, but every once in awhile I use them all.

4x5 - four
whole plate - three
8x10 - two or three
11x14 - two
If shooting with a pinhole camera, always take more than the above amounts.

I usually take half a dozen holders of whatever format I'm shooting. Of those I often have a couple of different films/speeds to choose from.

As I don't have many opportunities to enjoy a large format session, in those rare occasions I take 10 or 12 holders (4x5).

How many loaded holders does one take on a multi-day road trip?

My answer -- all of them (about thirty 8x10, a dozen or so 5x7, and about eight 11x14). I prefer not to change film on the road and keep them in the holders. One reason is so that I know from my notes how to develop the sheets. If I run out out of film in one format, I just use the other cameras.

Dear ultra-large format photographers! I just recently got into your big league by purchasing a 24 x 30 cm (about 10 x 12 inches) camera made in Germany around 1903... I am currently getting the camera in working order and hope to have everything ready for use by May. shooting. In this regard, a question for experts: how many holders do you usually take with you when shooting, planning to shoot landscapes that you can’t get close to by car?

My 4x5 bag has camera, bag bellows, 5 lenses, a light meter, accessories, and 10-15 preloaded holders ready to go at any given time.

- How much of them can you afford ?

Chamonix is selling 10x12 holders for 500$ each (plus VAT, plus shipping)
I am in the same case as you : I'm restoring an early-1900 10x12 camera and I have a huge roll of film in 24cm width. I would be more than happy to find a 24x30cm holder in good shape at a reasonable price, two would be a dream...

The Winters would have to be colder for me to try such a project but that is some beautiful woodwork!

I only shoot 4x5, usually carry 7 holders in my pack and try to have more close by. Depending on circumstances I may swap a lens for more holders. I hate changing bags, have about 65 film holders and prefer to load 50 sheets at a time.

Edit: Drain Bamage, 65 was before the fire. I counted 42 so I bought another 20, the price was right.

20 filmholders arrived today, late model 4x5 Liscos in very good condition for $6.30 ea taxed and delivered. While providing feedback I noticed a stack of 8x10 holders ..... $100 ea. Think I'll quietly tiptoe back to the large format section.
