Why are some of my images sideways?

Some images in my posts are rotated 90 degrees.

How can I correct this, or better yet prevent it?

    Here is an example:

If you used a phone to take the image, it's probably a metadata orientation problem. A slight tilt to the phone can confuse the orientation sensor in the phone and stamp it with wrong information.

I have learned to upload any images I wish to post to my computer and confirm how the basic image editor orients the photo before posting. If it's "catywampus", you can rotate it in the image viewer, save it and then post it with the proper orientation.

The software (which may be in a camera) used to rotate the image sometimes just marks the rotation in the meta data rather than actually remapping the pixels. Other display software (such as in a browser or in forum software) doesn’t always read and follow all that meta data in the same way.

Try using a different program to rotate your images.

Did you use an old camera or phone that automatically rotates the image?

Phone (Motorola) is about 6 months old

I upload the images to my Windows PC and then select them from there. I have not rotated the images at any time.

The auto rotate was turned on, now off and we will have to see if that changes anything.

I load my images into GIMP, which asks me what I want to do about meta data rotation information at the loading stage. I'm mostly just doing some crops, resize, and maybe some minor tweaks, so this is more than enough program for me. It also works on both my Windows and Linux systems. These phones are just too 'helpful'.

I believe the correct technical term is catawampus.

    adjective
    Out of alignment, crooked, cater-corner.

I use Flicker which is free or was for under 1000 pics

It resizes and auto corrects the 'UP'

I have 10K images in Flicker

way more in negs or prints

    I am tired of computers
