This area (Washington DC/MD/NoVA) is cicada central - we will be in the middle of an explosion, and it will be deafening.

The Ohio population of 17yr cicadas came out a few years ago. It was underwhelming, nothing like the past emergences.

Insects in general have vanished. When I was young (50's & early 60's) if you walked through a field there were grasshoppers flying every which way and praying mantises swaying on the stalks waiting to catch them. Now, nothing. Now no Monarchs in the fall. Plenty of mosquitos, though.

But when you snap a photo, will they smile?

Monarchs are in trouble nearly everywhere. I've only seen two tattered ones this year. Most of the milkweed is gone. Now people are starting to deliberately plant it.
