Forgive my American ignorance, but are North American cigarette lighter power adapters for electronic gizmos universal worldwide? I am renting a car in Italy next week and wondering if I should bring my chargers or if it is a wasted effort. Thank you.

As long as the batteries are the same, expect the lighter adapters to be the same too.
Oh by the way - the current term is "auxiliary power outlet", not "cigarette lighter"...

Ha! At first, I got a chuckle out of that. But... you're right! They don't supply the lighter element in new cars anymore -- just the outlet.
